Which measurement should I take first?

Measure total wall and ceiling square footage separately, since ceilings often need a different sheet orientation and more cuts around fixtures. Standard sheets come in 4x8 and 4x12 sizes — pick the sheet size you plan to buy before running the numbers, since it changes how many sheets and how much waste you'll have.
