Which measurement should I take first?

For fencing and decking, measure the total run length (perimeter or deck edge) rather than area, since posts, rails, and boards are priced per linear foot. Siding and driveway sealer, on the other hand, are based on surface area — measure exterior wall or driveway square footage and subtract large openings like garage doors before estimating quantity.

Suggested project order

  1. Fence — set property lines and posts before any other exterior work begins.
  2. Deck Board — frame and deck a structure once boundaries are fixed.
  3. Siding — reclad walls once deck ledger boards and attachment points are known.
  4. Gutter — hang gutters and downspouts once siding and fascia are finished.
  5. Driveway Sealer — a separate, unrelated surface — run this whenever the driveway needs resealing regardless of other work.
