Which measurement should I take first?
For fencing and decking, measure the total run length (perimeter or deck edge) rather than area, since posts, rails, and boards are priced per linear foot. Siding and driveway sealer, on the other hand, are based on surface area — measure exterior wall or driveway square footage and subtract large openings like garage doors before estimating quantity.
