Both figures sit at the upper end of the commonly cited 5-10% and 10-15% industry ranges respectively, chosen deliberately as a conservative default so a first-time buyer following the calculator's suggestion is less likely to run short mid-installation, which usually costs more in delay and a second delivery charge than a small amount of leftover material costs in money. The resulting area is divided by a box's coverage (20 sq ft by default, but always check your specific product's box, since this varies by plank size and manufacturer) to get the raw number of boxes needed, then rounded up to the next whole box, since flooring is sold in whole boxes. A 12 ft × 10 ft bedroom floored with laminate plank at the default 20 sq ft box coverage, straight layout, and a 10% waste allowance: floor area is 120 sq ft.
