How this works
Each bed's area (length × width) is multiplied by your target depth to get a raw volume in cubic feet, then summed across however many identical beds you specify, and converted to cubic yards (the standard bulk-mulch purchase unit) and to a whole number of standard 2 cubic foot bags, rounded up in both cases since mulch is sold in whole bulk-delivery increments or whole bags, not fractional amounts. The default 3-inch depth reflects horticultural extension-service guidance recommending 2 to 4 inches for most garden beds — shallower risks weak weed suppression and moisture retention, deeper risks rot and pest issues against plant stems (see the FAQ above for more on depth). This calculator's bed model assumes rectangular beds; for irregular or curved beds, the methodology note in the FAQ above covers how to approximate them. The unit toggle switches every input and result between imperial (feet, cubic yards, bags) and metric (metres, cubic metres) — internally, every calculation always runs in the same canonical units regardless of which one you're viewing, so switching back and forth never introduces rounding drift into your entered values. The 'identical beds' multiplier is a deliberate simplification for the common case of a yard with several matching or near-matching planting beds (along a fence line, flanking a driveway, framing a foundation) — it assumes every bed you're counting shares the same length, width, and target depth. It intentionally does not attempt to model a mix of differently sized beds in one run, because averaging dissimilar bed sizes into one combined figure would understate material needed for the largest bed and overstate it for the smallest; running the calculator once per distinct bed size, as the FAQ above recommends, keeps each estimate tied to a real, measured footprint rather than an averaged approximation. The tool also does not attempt to model settling, decomposition, or seasonal top-up volume in its main result — it answers 'how much do I need to reach this depth today,' not 'how much will I need over the life of this bed.' For a maintenance budget across multiple seasons, treat the settling guidance in the FAQ above (roughly 20-30% depth loss in year one for organic mulch) as a planning rule of thumb for a follow-up order, separate from this calculator's initial-application figure. Bulk cubic-yard figures are rounded up to two decimal places rather than to a whole yard, since most bulk suppliers accept partial-yard orders (commonly in half-yard or quarter-yard increments) — always confirm your specific supplier's minimum order increment before finalizing a bulk order, since a supplier requiring whole-yard minimums will need you to round further yourself. Worked example
A single garden bed 10 ft × 4 ft, mulched at the default 3-inch depth: bed area is 40 sq ft, and at 3 inches (0.25 ft) deep, that's 40 × 0.25 = 10 cubic feet of mulch needed. Converting to cubic yards (÷27): about 0.37 cubic yards — for a bed this small, bagged mulch is the more practical choice, and at 2 cubic feet per bag, that's 10 ÷ 2 = 5 bags, rounded up to the next whole bag if the raw figure isn't exact.
A second example: three matching beds
Three identical garden beds, each 12 ft × 5 ft, mulched at 4 inches deep (a slightly deeper application for a bed that dries out quickly in full sun): each bed is 60 sq ft, so three beds total 180 sq ft. At 4 inches (0.333 ft) deep, that's 180 × 0.333 ≈ 60 cubic feet, or about 2.2 cubic yards. At this volume, bulk delivery is typically more economical than the roughly 30 bags an all-bagged approach would require — most local mulch suppliers deliver in whole or half cubic-yard increments, so this project would likely round up to a 2.5 cubic yard bulk order. A third scenario shows why differently sized beds shouldn't be averaged into one 'identical beds' run: two foundation beds (each 25 ft × 3 ft) at 3 inches deep plus one larger island bed (18 ft × 8 ft) at 4 inches deep needs three separate calculations, summed by hand. The two foundation beds total 150 sq ft, which at 3 inches (0.25 ft) is 150 × 0.25 = 37.5 cubic feet. The island bed is 144 sq ft, which at 4 inches (0.333 ft) is about 48 cubic feet. Total: 37.5 + 48 = 85.5 cubic feet, or about 3.17 cubic yards — likely rounded up to a 3.25 or 3.5 cubic yard bulk order depending on the supplier's minimum increment. Running one combined calculation with an averaged bed size and depth across all three beds would have produced a noticeably less accurate figure than summing three correctly-sized, correctly-depthed calculations.
Common mistakes
Guessing depth by eye instead of measuring
It's easy to underestimate how thin 2 inches actually looks once it's spread over a large bed, and over-order or under-order as a result. Use a small ruler or stick marked at 2, 3, and 4 inches and check depth in a few spots as you spread, rather than eyeballing the whole bed at once.
Ordering bulk mulch by weight instead of volume
Mulch is sold and delivered by volume (cubic yards), not weight, because organic material varies widely in moisture content and density. If a supplier quotes you a price per ton, ask them to convert to cubic yards for comparison, since a wet, freshly-ground mulch weighs meaningfully more per cubic yard than the same material dried out.
Not accounting for beds you'll expand later this season
If you're planning to widen a bed's edge or add a new section later in the year, it's often cheaper to order slightly extra now (bulk delivery has a flat delivery fee regardless of quantity) than to pay for a second bulk delivery a few months later for a small top-up amount.
Piling mulch against trunks and stems ('volcano mulching')
Piling mulch in a cone shape against a tree trunk is one of the most common landscaping mistakes — it traps moisture against bark, invites rot, pests, and rodents, and can eventually girdle and kill the tree. Keep mulch spread flat in a wide ring, pulled back a few inches from the trunk itself.
Buying exactly the calculated amount with no buffer
Uneven ground, edging that eats into bed area, and the natural tendency to spread mulch slightly thicker near bed edges (for a cleaner visual line) all mean the raw calculated amount is a floor, not a ceiling. This calculator rounds bag counts up to the next whole bag, which builds in a small buffer — but for bulk orders, consider rounding up an extra quarter cubic yard for a large or irregular bed.
Applying fresh mulch without checking what's already there
If a bed already has an inch or two of old mulch, adding a full fresh layer on top can push total depth well past the recommended 4-inch ceiling. Check existing depth first and only add enough new mulch to bring the total up to your target depth, not a full new layer on top of what's already there.
Measuring bed dimensions at the outer edge instead of the actual planted area
It's tempting to measure a bed's outermost visible edge, including a border of bare soil or edging stone that won't actually get mulched. Measure the area you intend to cover with mulch itself, not the full footprint of the bed including its border, or you'll systematically over-order on every bed with a decorative edge.
Not confirming delivery access before ordering bulk mulch
Bulk mulch delivery trucks typically dump a pile at the end of a driveway or the nearest accessible point — they generally can't drive onto lawns or through narrow side-yard gates. If your beds are in a backyard with no vehicle access, confirm with the supplier whether they offer wheelbarrow-distance delivery (sometimes at an added fee) before ordering, since moving several cubic yards of mulch by hand from a street-side pile is a significant amount of extra labor that's easy to underestimate when just looking at the calculator's volume figure.
When this calculator's model stops applying
- Sloped beds: this tool assumes a flat depth applied evenly. On a noticeably sloped bed, mulch naturally migrates downhill over time, so consider a slightly deeper application at the top of the slope and expect to redistribute material occasionally.
- Very large landscaped areas (over roughly 1,000 sq ft total): at this scale, ordering bulk mulch by the truckload from a local supplier is almost always more economical than bagged mulch, and delivery minimums/truck capacity become the binding constraint rather than the calculated volume alone — call ahead to confirm delivery minimums.
- Beds around retaining walls or raised beds with vertical edges: these hold mulch differently than flat ground-level beds and may need a deeper edge application to prevent runoff during heavy rain, which this flat-depth model doesn't account for.
- Playground or high-traffic areas: engineered wood fiber playground mulch has different depth requirements (often 6+ inches for fall-safety certification) than ornamental garden mulch, and safety-certified depth should be verified against the specific product's certification, not this calculator's 1-6 inch ornamental-bed range.
- New construction or heavily compacted soil beds: if the soil underneath hasn't been amended, consider whether a soil amendment layer is needed before mulching — this calculator only estimates the mulch layer itself, not any soil prep beneath it.
- Multiple different mulch types in one project (e.g., decorative bark near the house, cheaper wood chips further out): calculate each material's area separately, since combining them into one bed count would apply a single material assumption across areas that actually need different products.
- Beds under mature tree canopies with heavy surface roots: exposed roots make it hard to achieve a uniform depth across the whole bed footprint, and piling extra mulch over roots to compensate can smother them the same way volcano mulching harms a trunk. Expect to apply a thinner, less uniform layer in root-heavy areas and treat the calculator's flat-depth volume as an upper bound rather than an exact target there.
- Beds that will be top-dressed with a decorative rock or gravel border rather than a hard edge: where mulch meets loose stone with no physical barrier between them, mulch tends to migrate into the rock over time (and vice versa), gradually reducing effective depth at that edge faster than the interior of the bed. Budget slightly more material for beds with a soft stone border, or install an edging strip to keep the two materials separated.
- Areas where local wildfire-defensible-space or fire-code rules restrict mulch type or depth near structures: some jurisdictions in fire-prone regions limit combustible organic mulch within a set distance of a building's foundation, requiring gravel or a non-combustible groundcover instead within that zone. This calculator doesn't know your local fire code — check with your local fire authority before mulching close to a structure in a wildfire-risk area.

How deep should my mulch layer be?
Most garden beds do best with 2 to 4 inches of mulch. This calculator defaults to 3 inches, the middle of that range. Less than 2 inches doesn't suppress weeds effectively or retain much soil moisture; more than 4 inches can hold too much water against plant stems and roots, encouraging rot and pests.
Should I mulch right up against the base of trees and shrubs?

Does mulch type (bark, wood chips, straw, rubber) change the amount I need?
No — the volume math (area × depth) is the same regardless of material, since it's a geometric calculation, not a material-specific one. What does vary by material is settling rate and longevity: shredded hardwood bark typically breaks down over 1-2 years, while rubber mulch can last many years without needing to be topped up, which affects how often you'll need to reorder, not how much you need for the first application.
Can I use this for a vegetable garden instead of ornamental beds?
Yes, the area × depth calculation works the same way, but consider a thinner layer (1-2 inches) around vegetables with shallow roots, and use an organic mulch like straw or shredded leaves rather than wood bark, which can tie up nitrogen in the soil as it breaks down near heavy-feeding vegetable crops.
How much does mulch shrink when compared loose versus compacted in the bag?

Why does the depth field only accept values between 1 and 6 inches?

Does the calculator account for the mulch that gets displaced by rainfall or wind?
