How this works
The calculator works in rows. Each row of decking occupies the board's actual face width plus one spacing gap, so the number of rows is your deck's width divided by that coverage width, rounded up to a whole row — decks are built with whole rows, and the final row is trimmed or overhung rather than omitted. Board widths come from standard North American lumber dimensioning: a nominal 5/4×6 or 2×6 board actually measures 5-1/2 in across the face, and a 2×4 measures 3-1/2 in, per retailer decking guides. Total linear footage is rows × deck length, inflated by your selected waste factor (10% for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal layouts, matching the convention used across retailer deck estimators) to cover end-cuts, culled boards, and joint staggering. That linear total is then divided by your chosen standard board length (8, 12, or 16 ft — the lengths lumberyards routinely stock) and rounded up to whole purchasable boards. Two disclosed simplifications: the model charges every row one gap even though the last row against the rim needs none (a sub-board-width detail absorbed by rounding), and it assumes offcuts from one row are reusable in another where joint staggering allows, which is what the waste factor budgets for. For L-shaped or multi-level decks, run each rectangular section separately with its own board direction and add the results. Worked example
A 16 ft × 12 ft deck with 5/4×6 boards (5.5 in actual) at 1/4-in spacing, boards running the 16-ft direction, bought as 16-ft boards with 10% waste: each row covers 5.75 in, and 144 in of deck width ÷ 5.75 in = 25.04, rounded up to 26 rows. Total linear footage is 26 rows × 16 ft × 1.10 = 457.6 ft. Divided by 16-ft boards, that's 28.6 — rounded up to 29 boards. Note how close the row count was to exactly 25: a slightly wider gap or a half-inch less deck width drops a whole row, which is why the calculator rounds rows up rather than to nearest.
A second example: the same deck with 12-ft boards
The same 16 ft × 12 ft deck ordered as 12-ft boards instead: rows and total linear footage are unchanged (26 rows, 457.6 ft including waste), but 457.6 ÷ 12 = 38.1, rounded up to 39 boards. Each 16-ft row now needs one full 12-ft board plus a 4-ft piece — and the 8-ft offcut from that second board serves the row after next only if joints stagger cleanly on the joists. This is why board-length choice matters beyond price: 29 × 16 ft = 464 ft of purchased lumber versus 39 × 12 ft = 468 ft buys nearly the same wood, but the 12-ft option adds 26 butt joints to fasten and align.
Common mistakes
Estimating with nominal board width instead of actual
Dividing your deck width by 6 inches because the board is called a "6-inch" board undercounts rows by about 9% before the gap is even considered. Always use actual width — 5.5 in for 5/4×6 and 2×6, 3.5 in for 2×4 — which is what this calculator does automatically based on your board selection.
Forgetting that butt joints must land on joists
If your deck's board run is longer than one board, every splice has to land centered on a joist (ideally a doubled joist or with blocking). A count that works on paper can fail at install if joints cluster on the same joist line — stagger joints between neighboring rows, which is one of the reasons the 10% waste factor exists.
Ignoring the gap when counting rows
Each row occupies board width plus one gap. Over a 12-ft-wide deck at 1/4-in spacing that's about one full extra board-width of coverage compared to laying boards tight — skip the gap in your math and you'll buy roughly one row too many, or worse, plan a tight layout that traps water and debris between boards.
Buying boards that put a sliver row at the edge
If the last row works out to a 1-inch sliver, the deck looks unfinished and the sliver is hard to fasten without splitting. Before ordering, check the remainder: deck width ÷ (board width + gap). If the fraction is tiny, consider adjusting the overhang, the gap (within the allowed range), or ripping the first and last rows to two equal, wider partial boards.
Treating diagonal decking like a straight layout
Diagonal (45°) decking consumes noticeably more material — every board ends in two angled cuts and short offcuts near corners are rarely reusable. It also usually requires tighter joist spacing. Use the 15% waste option for diagonal layouts, and expect the true figure to sit at the high end for small decks where edge effects dominate.
Counting only surface boards for the budget
Decking boards are typically only 30–50% of a deck's material cost. Framing lumber, footings, hardware, fasteners, and railing routinely cost more than the surface. Use this calculator for the decking line item, not the whole project budget.
Not culling before installing
Sight down every board before it goes on the deck: crown (bow along the face) should be laid crown-up, badly cupped or waned boards go back or become blocking, and boards with large edge knots shouldn't span between joists at a butt joint. The waste factor assumes you'll reject a few boards — plan your trip so you can actually exchange them.
When this calculator's model stops applying
- Diagonal (45°) or herringbone layouts: the row model still approximates the area, but real consumption runs higher and joist spacing requirements tighten. Use the 15% waste option and treat the result as a floor, not a ceiling, for herringbone or picture-framed patterns.
- Picture-frame borders and breaker boards: a perimeter border row and any mid-deck breaker board are laid perpendicular to the field and must be counted separately — run the calculator for the field inside the border, then add border linear footage by measuring the perimeter directly.
- Curved deck edges: boards overhang the curve and are trimmed after fastening, so every board on the curve is a full-length board with a cut end. Estimate the bounding rectangle of the curved section rather than its true area.
- Very long runs (over 20 ft): no standard board spans them, so joint planning drives the order. Decide your splice layout first (e.g. staggered 12 + 8 ft), then convert the calculator's total linear footage into that mix by hand instead of using a single length selection.
- Multi-level decks and stairs: each level is its own rectangle with its own run direction; stair treads are cut from deck boards (typically two 5/4×6 boards per tread) and are not modeled here at all.
- Metric-market composite profiles: some boards sold outside North America are 140 mm or 145 mm wide, not 5.5 in. Switch the calculator to metric and check your profile's data sheet — a 5 mm width difference compounds to a full row over a wide deck.
- Green (wet) pressure-treated lumber installed tight: it shrinks as it dries, opening its own gap. If you plan to install tight-laid wet PT, set the gap near the low bound and accept that final gaps depend on moisture content, which this calculator cannot model.
FAQ
Why does a "6-inch" deck board only cover about 5.5 inches?
Lumber is sold by nominal size, not actual size. A 5/4×6 or 2×6 deck board is planed down to about 5-1/2 inches of actual face width at the mill. This calculator always uses actual widths (5.5 in for a 6-in nominal board, 3.5 in for a 2×4), because estimating with nominal widths would undercount your boards by roughly 9% — enough to leave you a full row or two short on a typical deck.
What gap should I leave between deck boards?
Most wood and composite decking manufacturers recommend roughly 1/8 to 1/4 inch between boards for drainage and expansion. Wet pressure-treated lumber is often installed nearly tight (it shrinks to open a gap as it dries), while kiln-dried and composite boards need the gap left at install time. This calculator lets you pick the gap because it changes the row count: over a 12-ft-wide deck, moving from 1/4 in to 1/8 in spacing adds roughly half a board-width of coverage per 25 rows.
Which board length should I choose — 8, 12, or 16 ft?
Pick the shortest standard length that spans your deck's board-run direction without a joint, if you can — a 16-ft board across a 16-ft run means no butt joints at all. If your run is longer than any stocked board, choose a length that divides the run cleanly (two 12-ft boards over a 24-ft run) so joints land on joists and offcuts stay usable. Shorter boards are easier to handle and often cheaper per board, but every butt joint needs to land on (ideally double) joist support.
Why does the calculator add 10% waste?
End-cuts, boards culled for crowning or bad knots, and trimming for a clean overhang all consume material that never becomes deck surface. The standard estimation convention used by retailer deck calculators is about 10% for a straight layout. Diagonal (45°) decking wastes more — every board gets two angled end-cuts — so select 15% for diagonal layouts or decks with lots of angles and cutouts.
Do boards run across the width or along the length of my deck?
In this calculator, "deck length" is the direction the boards run and "deck width" is the direction the rows stack. If your boards run the other way on your actual deck, just swap the two numbers — the deck area is the same either way, but the board count can differ slightly because row count and per-board offcut change with orientation. Running boards along the longer dimension usually minimizes butt joints.
Does this include the frame — joists, beams, posts, and hardware?
No. This calculator covers the walking surface (decking boards) only. Joists, beams, posts, footings, ledger, hangers, and hidden fasteners or screws are a separate takeoff that depends on your joist spacing and framing plan. As a rule of thumb you'll need roughly 350 screws per 100 sq ft of decking at 16-in joist spacing (two screws per board per joist), but check your fastener maker's chart.
Does board width matter for joist spacing?
Yes, indirectly. Standard 5/4×6 decking is rated for joists at 16 in on center when laid perpendicular; diagonal layouts typically require tighter (12 in) spacing. Thinner or narrower profiles and some composites have their own span ratings. This calculator assumes your framing already suits your chosen board — it counts boards, it doesn't check spans.
Should I use 5/4×6, 2×6, or 2×4 boards?
5/4×6 (5.5 in actual, about 1 in thick) is the standard purpose-milled deck board — radius edges, lighter, cheapest per square foot of coverage. 2×6 covers the same width with more stiffness and mass, useful for longer joist spans or heavy use. 2×4 (3.5 in actual) gives a finer-striped look but needs roughly 55% more rows and more fasteners for the same deck, which is why switching the selector to 2×4 raises the board count sharply.
How do I handle a deck that isn't a simple rectangle?
Split it into rectangles and run the calculator once per rectangle, using each section's own board-run direction, then add the board counts. That's more accurate than averaging the shape into one big rectangle, because whole-board rounding and row counts happen per section in real construction too. For wrap-around decks, treat each leg of the wrap as its own rectangle.
Can I use this for composite decking?
Yes, with two adjustments: check the actual face width of your specific composite profile (many are 5.5 in like wood, but some are 5.25 in or metric) and use the manufacturer's required gap, which is often larger than wood's and sometimes temperature-dependent at install time. Composite boards also come in different standard lengths (12, 16, and 20 ft are common), so pick the closest length option and round conservatively.
Should I add extra boards beyond the calculated count?
The 10% waste factor plus whole-board rounding already builds in a buffer for a straight, competently planned layout. Consider one or two extra boards anyway if your lumberyard's stock quality is poor (you'll cull more for crowning and wane), if you can't easily return unused boards, or if you want a matching spare for future board replacement — decking weathers, and a board bought years later will look different for a season or two.
Can I switch between imperial and metric partway through?
Yes — the unit toggle converts every field you've already entered. Internally the tool always computes from the same canonical values regardless of which unit is displayed, so switching back and forth doesn't introduce rounding error into your result.
