How this works
Wall area is calculated the same way as the paint calculator: room perimeter times wall height, minus a standard opening size for each door and window. That area is multiplied by your number of coats (primer is usually one), then divided by the coverage rate to get raw gallons needed — rounded up to the nearest whole gallon. The default coverage rate of 200 sq ft/gallon is deliberately set at the conservative, lower-coverage end of the commonly cited 200-300 sq ft/gallon range for primer, on the reasoning that overestimating primer (which is comparatively inexpensive per can) is a safer default error than underestimating it and running short mid-coat, where an uneven pause point can leave a visible line once the topcoat goes on. The same single-rectangle simplification applies here as in the paint calculator: irregular rooms are more accurately estimated by summing individually measured wall segments than by a single length × width figure, and the model slightly overestimates for rooms with alcoves or jogs rather than underestimating, which is the safer direction for a purchase estimate to err in. This calculator also assumes one coat is sufficient, which is standard for a same-surface-type repaint or ordinary new drywall — if your walls combine multiple surface conditions (a patched section next to sound existing paint, for instance), the single flat coverage rate and coat count won't capture that variation, and the practical fix is to run the calculator for the whole room at the lower coat count, then separately estimate any patch or stain area that needs an extra coat and add that on top, as shown in the second worked example below. The same 12 ft × 10 ft bedroom with 8 ft ceilings, one door, and two windows, primed with one coat at the default 200 sq ft/gallon coverage rate: wall area is about 304 sq ft, needing roughly 1.5 gallons of raw primer — rounded up to 2 gallons, since primer is sold in whole cans.
A second example: priming a patched, stained wall
The same 12 ft × 10 ft bedroom, but this time the wall has a water stain across roughly a third of one wall and needs two coats of stain-blocking primer over the stained section (one coat elsewhere). Rather than model partial-wall coats, the practical approach is: calculate the whole room at 1 coat (2 gallons, as in the first example), then separately estimate the stained section's area (roughly 3.3 ft × 8 ft = 26.4 sq ft) and add one extra coat's worth for just that patch (26.4 ÷ 200 ≈ 0.13 gallons, rounds up to a small top-up can or leftover from the main can). Common mistakes
Using a standard primer where a stain-blocking primer was needed
Water stains, smoke damage, or crayon marks will bleed through a standard primer and show up under the topcoat. If you're covering any kind of stain, use a labeled stain-blocking primer, not just whatever's cheapest.
Priming over glossy paint without scuffing it first
Primer needs some surface texture to grip. Painting straight over a high-gloss or semi-gloss existing finish without a light sanding pass first can leave the primer (and everything after it) prone to peeling in sheets months later, even though it looks fine on day one.
Treating primer coverage the same as paint coverage
Because primer soaks into the surface rather than sitting on top, using paint's 350 sq ft/gallon assumption instead of primer's genuinely lower 200–300 sq ft/gallon rate is the single most common way people under-buy primer specifically — this calculator defaults to the lower, primer-specific figure for exactly this reason.
Choosing water-based primer for a heavy stain or odor problem
Water-based primer is the right default for most jobs, but it's the wrong choice for smoke damage, pet odor, or a stubborn water stain — those need a shellac- or oil-based stain-blocking primer specifically. Reaching for the fast-drying, low-odor water-based can out of habit on a stain job is a common way to end up repriming the same wall a second time.
Forgetting to tint the primer before a dramatic color change
Skipping the free (or cheap) tinting option when going from a dark existing color to a light new one, or vice versa, means the topcoat has to do all the color-hiding work alone — often turning a two-coat paint job into a three-coat one. Tinted primer is one of the cheapest ways to cut down on topcoat coats needed.
Applying primer too thick to save a second trip to the store
Rolling primer on thicker than a normal coat, hoping to stretch one gallon further or build extra stain-blocking power in a single pass, usually backfires: thick primer takes much longer to dry, can develop a skin over a wetter interior that stays soft, and is more likely to show roller-stipple texture through the topcoat. If you're short on primer, it's better to do a thin, even coat and buy a small top-up can than to overwork one gallon.
Not checking dry time before judging whether a second coat is needed
Primer can look fully dry at the surface within an hour while still curing underneath, especially stain-blocking and oil-based formulas. Judging "is one coat enough" by touch or appearance too early can lead to an unnecessary second coat, or worse, painting a topcoat over primer that hasn't fully cured. Check the product label's full cure time, not just its dry-to-touch time, before deciding.
When this calculator's model stops applying
- Heavily stained or water-damaged drywall: coverage can drop well below the 200 sq ft/gallon default, and a single coat may not fully block a severe stain — budget for a second coat over the stained area specifically, even if the rest of the room needs only one.
- Bare, unsealed masonry or brick: these surfaces are far more porous than drywall and can need 2–3x the primer volume this calculator estimates. Treat the result here as a floor, not a full estimate, for masonry.
- Glossy or previously oil-based painted surfaces: adhesion (not coverage volume) is the limiting factor here — see the Common Mistakes section on scuffing glossy surfaces before priming.
- Very large or vaulted spaces: same caveat as the paint calculator — a single flat wall-height entry underestimates paint/primer needs for sloped ceilings or unusually tall walls.
- Wallpaper or wallpaper residue: primer alone doesn't reliably seal old wallpaper paste, and paint applied over incompletely-removed paste can cause the paper (and everything on top of it) to bubble or peel later. Fully strip wallpaper and clean the wall before priming rather than treating primer as a shortcut around removal.
- Mixed surfaces in the same room (drywall walls plus a brick or stone accent feature): treat the accent feature as a separate area with its own, typically much lower, coverage rate rather than averaging one figure across the whole room — averaging tends to under-buy for the porous section and over-buy for the drywall section, and the porous section is the one that actually runs short.
- Ceiling-to-wall stain bleed from roof leaks or plumbing issues: a stain that has spread across both a section of ceiling and the top of an adjoining wall needs the same stain-blocking primer treated as one continuous area, not estimated as two unrelated small patches — measure the full affected footprint (ceiling plus wall) together so the coat count and product choice stay consistent across the visible stain boundary.
- New construction primer applied months before the topcoat: primer left exposed to dust, sunlight, or humidity for an extended period before topcoating can lose adhesion quality or pick up a fine film of dust that shows through the paint. If more than a few weeks pass between priming and painting, a light wipe-down or scuff-sand of the primed surface before topcoating is worth doing, even though this calculator's model assumes priming and painting happen close together.
FAQ
Do I really need to prime before painting?
Not always — priming matters most over bare drywall, patched repairs, stains, or a big color shift (e.g., dark to light). If you're repainting a similar color over sound existing paint, you can often skip it.
Can I use paint-and-primer-in-one instead of a separate primer?
For minor color changes on sound existing paint, yes. For bare drywall, water stains, or major color shifts, a dedicated stain-blocking or bonding primer performs better than a combined product — combined products are formulated as a compromise and generally block stains less reliably than a purpose-made stain-blocking primer.
Why is primer coverage lower than paint coverage?
Primer is formulated to soak into and seal the surface rather than sit on top of it, so it spreads over less area per gallon than finish paint — roughly 200–300 sq ft/gallon versus paint's 350–400 sq ft/gallon.
How long should I wait between priming and painting?
Most primers are dry to the touch within 30 minutes to an hour, but check the specific product's label — some stain-blocking and oil-based primers need several hours before they're ready for a topcoat, and painting too soon can cause the topcoat to lift or show brush marks.
Do I need to prime the ceiling too, or just the walls?

What's the difference between water-based and oil-based primer?
Water-based (latex) primer dries faster, has less odor, and cleans up with soap and water — it's the right default for most drywall and previously-latex-painted walls. Oil-based (alkyd) primer bonds better to glossy surfaces and blocks stains more aggressively, but takes longer to dry and needs mineral spirits for cleanup. Shellac-based primer is the strongest stain blocker of the three (smoke damage, water stains, even some odors) but has the strongest fumes and shortest working time before it sets.
Do I need to sand between the primer coat and the paint?
Usually not for a smooth wall roller-applied primer. No — the bounds exist to catch obviously wrong entries (a typo, or a figure copied from paint rather than primer), not to suggest the whole range is typical. The default of 200 sq ft/gallon sits at the conservative, lower-coverage end of the commonly cited 200-300 range on purpose; most jobs on smooth drywall land between 200 and 300, and values outside 150-350 usually mean you've entered the wrong product's coverage figure.
Do I need a different primer for wood trim than for drywall walls?
Often yes. Bare wood trim, especially anything with knots, benefits from a stain-blocking or shellac-based primer to stop tannins from bleeding through the topcoat over time — a plain drywall-oriented latex primer won't reliably block this. If your project includes both walls and bare wood trim, budget for two different primer products rather than one can covering both.
Can I apply primer with a sprayer instead of a roller, and does that change coverage?
Yes, spraying is common for large jobs, but sprayed coverage is usually lower per gallon than rolled coverage because overspray and atomization loss waste material that a roller keeps on the wall.
