How Many Pavers Do I Need?
Divide your patio's area in square feet by the face area of one paver in square feet, then add 5% to 10% for cuts and breakage and round up to whole pavers. A 4×8 inch paver is 4.5 pavers per square foot, so a 10×10 ft patio is 100 × 4.5 = 450 pavers before waste. For your own dimensions, a curved or diagonal layout, or a different paver size, the paver calculator does the math for you. This page is a quick reference: pavers per square foot by size, and counts by patio size.
Pavers per square foot by paver size
One paver's face in square feet is its length × width in inches ÷ 144, and pavers per square foot is the inverse: 144 ÷ (length × width). The last column shows the count if the listed size is the paver itself and a 3/16 in joint (the widest in the CMHA paver installation guidance range) is added to each dimension. Check the label for whether the listed size already includes the spacing before using that column.
| Paver size | Face area | Pavers per sq ft | With 3/16 in joint |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4×8 in | 32 sq in | 4.5 | 4.2 |
| 6×6 in | 36 sq in | 4 | 3.76 |
| 6×9 in | 54 sq in | 2.67 | 2.53 |
| 12×12 in | 144 sq in | 1 | 0.97 |
| 12×24 in | 288 sq in | 0.5 | 0.49 |
| 16×16 in | 256 sq in | 0.56 | 0.55 |
| 24×24 in | 576 sq in | 0.25 | 0.25 |
How many pavers by patio size
Each cell shows the whole-paver count at 5% waste, then at 10% waste. The lower figure suits a straight-lay rectangle, the higher a curved edge or a diagonal pattern, per Waste allowance (5–10%): Belgard paver project guidance. Counts round up to the next whole paver.

How many pavers in a pallet
There is no standard pallet count: it depends on the paver size, thickness, and manufacturer, so this page does not give one. Ask the supplier for either the number of pavers per pallet or the square feet one pallet covers, and divide: pallets = pavers needed ÷ pavers per pallet, rounded up. If the supplier quotes coverage instead, divide your patio area plus waste by that coverage. For a 10×10 ft patio in 4×8 inch pavers at 5% waste, the table above gives 473pavers, and that is the number to divide by the supplier's per-pallet figure. Ask the supplier whether partial pallets are sold.
