How Many Bricks Do I Need?
Multiply your wall's length by its height to get the face area in square feet, then multiply by 7— the standard coverage for modular brick with a 3/8" mortar joint. Add 10% for waste and round up. That covers a plain wall with no openings; for a wall with doors, windows, a non-standard brick size, or a different waste allowance, the brick calculatordoes the same math with those adjustments built in. Why 7 bricks per square foot
Standard US modular brick measures 7-5/8" long by 2-1/4" high on its face. Laid with a 3/8" mortar joint on every side, each brick occupies a nominal 8" × 2-2/3" module of wall — 32 square inches including its share of the joint — which works out to just under 7 bricks per square foot. Brick coverage convention (7 bricks/sq ft, modular brick with 3/8" joint): The Home Depot brick estimating guide; sizing per Brick Industry Association Technical Note 10 is the number every major retailer and masonry guide converges on, and it already accounts for the mortar joint — you don't add anything separately for that. It assumes running bond (the common pattern, every brick showing its long face) and standard modular sizing; queen, king, utility, or metric-format brick cover different areas per unit.
Typical brick counts by project
The figures below use the same method — face area × 7, plus 10% waste — for a few common project shapes, so you can get a ballpark before you measure anything. None of these subtract door or window openings; a real wall with openings needs fewer bricks than its raw area suggests, which is exactly what the calculator's opening fields are for.

A whole-house figure like the last row is almost always an overestimate in practice, since it doesn't subtract any doors or windows — run your actual wall-by-wall dimensions through the brick calculator once you have them, and expect the real number to land somewhat below the raw-area figure here.
A full example: a brick pillar or mailbox column
Walls aren't the only thing brick covers, and a pillar needs a different approach because it has four faces instead of one. Take a mailbox column or small pier with a 12" × 12" footprint, standing 4 ft tall above grade: each of its four faces is 1 ft wide by 4 ft tall, or 4 square feet, and 4 faces × 4 sq ft = 16 square feet of total face area. At 7 bricks per square foot, that's 16 × 7= 112 bricks, and with the standard 10% waste allowance, 112 × 1.1 = 123.2 — round up to 124 bricks to buy. This slightly over-counts, because each corner brick technically serves two faces at once; for a structure this small the difference is a handful of bricks, well inside the waste allowance already built in. The same face-by-face approach scales up to a chimney or a larger pier — sum each face's area before applying the rate, and lean on the higher end of the waste range, since a four-sided structure generates proportionally more corner cuts than a flat wall.
